TERRANOVA aims to advance raw earth construction for buildings and furniture through advanced digital manufacturing, revisiting and strengthening vernacular architectural techniques. The goal is to consolidate a robotic prototyping station with interchangeable end effectors for earth printing, rammed earth, and earth masonry, and to characterize and classify the soils of Chile’s Central Zone. The project explores three principles: deposition (Terra Positus), ramming (Terra Compresus), and masonry (Terra Triculus), applied to local earth in dry, solid, moist, and liquid states.

Since conventional construction is highly polluting and global material use is expected to double by 2060, low-impact materials like earth deserve renewed attention. Digital earth construction has existed since 2011, but no Chilean initiative has yet matched the diversity and scale proposed here, which could mark a milestone for sustainable architecture.

Luca designed two extruder versions for the initial stages of this work, the second with exchangeable 3D-printed nozzles. Along side them, a CNC-milled wood rammer end effector for the first robotically rammed earth walls in Latin America.
